AI in Helicopter Maintenance – Amygda Featured in Vertical Magazine

Amygda has been featured in the September issue of Vertical Magazine, a leading publication in the helicopter industry. Our CEO, Faizan Patankar, had the opportunity to speak with Lisa Gordon about the crucial role of artificial intelligence (AI) in helicopter maintenance.

The Need for AI in Helicopter Predictive Maintenance

As helicopters become increasingly sophisticated, they generate vast amounts of information during every flight and maintenance cycle.

This data holds immense potential for improving safety, efficiency, and operational costs. However, the sheer quantity of information presents a significant challenge for traditional analysis methods.

Faizan emphasised that the proliferation of helicopter data has created a pressing need for advanced monitoring tools.

AI excels at identifying patterns and correlations that human analysts might miss. By sifting through vast amounts of data, AI can pinpoint the most relevant parameters for analysis, leading to more accurate predictive maintenance, improved safety protocols, and optimised operational efficiency.

AI and Human Knowledge in Partnership

While focusing on the transformative potential of AI, Faizan also noted its current limitations.

At this stage of development, AI still requires expert knowledge to validate and interpret the insights it generates. This human-in-the-loop approach ensures that AI’s power is harnessed responsibly and effectively.

The collaboration between AI systems and human experts represents the best of both worlds: the unparalleled data processing capabilities of AI combined with the nuanced understanding and decision-making skills of experienced professionals.

“Between AI and any ordinary worker right now, I would trust AI. A lot of these technologies are now at an engineering intern level . At the moment, take their learnings as a first drop – our job (as AI engineers) is to refine that learning and support the human with validated data they can trust.”
